Kano Pillars fans will recall that before the 2026-27 NPFL season got underway, the club settled into a one-week closed camp in Abuja, a move that formed the final stretch of their preseason preparations.

The Sai Masu Gida touched down in the Federal Capital Territory on a Friday after wrapping up a string of warm-up matches in Katsina. Head coach Daniel Ogunmodede used the Abuja stay to sharpen the team's shape and fitness, with more friendly fixtures lined up during the camp to test the squad further.

The timing of that camp mattered a great deal for a club that had a scare last term, managing to avoid the drop only on the final day of the season. For the four-time NPFL champions, there was no room to take this year's preparations lightly, and the Abuja trip was clearly part of a deliberate plan to start strong.

That plan was soon put to the test. Kano Pillars opened their 2026-27 campaign away to Kwara United in Ilorin on Sunday, 30 August, in a game that ended 2-2. Abdulraheem Shola put the Sai Masu Gida ahead in the 11th minute, and Rabiu Ali doubled the lead in the 29th, but Kwara United's Jerry Alex struck twice, in the 47th minute and deep into added time in the 90th plus 7th minute, to snatch a share of the spoils.

Pillars responded well in their following outing on Matchday 2, beating Niger Tornadoes 3-2 at home on 6 September. Friday Ubong opened the scoring in the 40th minute, and Fabian Nworie Maduabuchi followed up with a brace, netting in the 45+3rd and 54th minutes, to put the home side firmly in control. Niger Tornadoes fought back through Godfrey Joseph in the 73rd minute and Wasiu Jimoh in the 90th, but it was not enough to deny Kano Pillars the win. Aminu Sani picked up a yellow card in the 34th minute of that match.

Two matches in, and already the benefits of that Abuja camp look evident in how the team is grinding out results. For Kano Pillars supporters, the hope is that the preparation and organisation shown before the season translates into a much more comfortable campaign than the nervy finish they endured last term.
