Kano Pillars have returned to winning ways after a tense 1-0 victory over Katsina United at the Sani Abacha Stadium on Sunday, a result that lifted the mood around the club following a stretch of underwhelming performances.
The only goal of the Matchday 9 derby was a well-taken strike from Sai Masu Gida, and it proved enough to send the home fans into celebration. The win was particularly significant because it ended a run of five matches without victory for the Kano side, a sequence that included draws against Inter Lagos, Enyimba, Sporting Lagos and Shooting Stars, as well as a heavy 4-0 defeat away to Plateau United.
Technical Adviser Daniel Ogunmodede did not hide his delight after the final whistle, praising his players for the character they showed under pressure, especially in the early stages of the contest. "I must congratulate the boys for putting up a brilliant fight. We had not tasted a win in the last five games, and they delivered in the derby," he said.
The coach also commended his team for the balance they struck between attack and defence, noting that the winning goal came from good build-up play. "That was a very good goal. We attacked well and defended well to get the maximum points with a clean sheet," Ogunmodede stated.
For a man who has spent three decades in the game, the demand for results never changes. "It is part of my job to win. I like winning because that is what I am paid for. For three decades now, winning has always been my motive," he added, reflecting on what continues to drive him in the dugout.
With the derby win now behind them, Kano Pillars will be keen to carry the momentum into their next assignment, a trip to Warri Wolves FC for a Matchday 10 fixture on Sunday, October 25. Pillars supporters will hope this victory marks a genuine turning point rather than just a brief interruption to a difficult run of form.
